Efficiency improvement and environmental protection go hand in hand.
Becker Marine Systems is committed to environmental protection and reducing the ecological footprint of its products. To achieve our sustainability goals, we pursue a three-part approach: constant product optimisation and efficiency enhancement, the development of sustainable processes, and responsible management at our own sites. We harness our innovative strength and continuously develop new solutions for improved energy efficiency and emission reduction in shipping. In this way, we aim to make a significant contribution to environmental and climate protection.
Becker products for eco-friendly shipping
Becker Marine Systems actively contributes to more sustainable shipping by developing advanced technologies that improve both the efficiency and environmental compatibility of maritime operations. The Energy-Saving Devices Becker Mewis Duct® and Becker Twisted Fin® improve water flow to the propeller, enhancing propulsion efficiency and significantly reducing power consumption and thus CO2 emissions. Our Becker rudders optimise ship manoeuvrability, reduce the need for tug assistance, and contribute to further savings in fuel and emissions. Additionally, the Becker Daggerboard, an anti-drift device, provides optimal support for ships using wind propulsion systems. These innovations not only help reduce operating costs but also promote sustainable maritime technologies.
More responsibility for less environmental impact in shipbuilding
Becker Marine Systems’ products are specifically designed for use under the harsh conditions of the marine environment. A key feature of these products is the minimisation of environmental impact by avoiding the release of hazardous substances. For rudder bearings that regularly come into contact with seawater, Becker has replaced conventional sealing systems with seawater lubrication. This significantly reduces environmental risks, as no hazardous substances are released, no used lubricants need to be disposed of, and the rudder systems achieve increased reliability through continuous lubrication. In cases where seawater lubrication is not possible or practical, Becker uses environmentally friendly lubricants. If a coating is necessary and not performed by the shipyard, Becker uses the latest standards in biocide-free coatings, ensuring minimal emissions of volatile components during application.
Sustainable processes at Becker Marine Systems
At Becker Marine Systems, special emphasis is placed on sustainable processes at every stage of the value chain – from production to operation to recycling of our products. To this end, we cooperate with certified partners and suppliers who meet the highest quality standards. They are part of a comprehensive environmental management system based on three pillars: our own QHSE department, external independent institutes, and close cooperation with certification bodies. This enables us to conduct complex processes globally while minimising environmental impact.
Climate-neutral sites by 2030
Our commitment to sustainability also extends to our locations. Becker Marine Systems aims to make all our sites climate-neutral by 2030. This includes a comprehensive review and optimisation of the environmentally relevant aspects of our office buildings, such as increasing energy efficiency, wastewater treatment, waste management, handling water-polluting substances, and reducing air emissions. To effectively manage these environmental requirements, we have established specific internal processes and analyse our data according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. These processes are designed to continuously review our environmental impact and actively implement improvements to ensure responsible and sustainable operations
